Research

_____

Competitive Analysis

During this process, I chose to analyse three existing personal finance desktop apps such as YNAB, Mint Intuit and Money Dashboard. Since I knew very little about them, I researched the origins, purpose and benefits of these apps.

The comparison assisted me in identifying the strengths and weaknesses. Since I knew very little about them, I began by learning about the purposes and benefits. I did more research when I had a better idea and discovered three firms that make these applications. I was able to recognise strengths and drawbacks by doing a thorough comparison analysis.

Analysis

_____

Target Market

I conducted surveys and interviews with 15 potential consumers. I created 5 questions based on personal finance management. I sent it to fifteen people and twelve replied within two days providing their opinions.

Based on the statistics and observations, I discovered that a lesser fraction of people were utilising these applications. It is important to understand the consumers’ perspective. It posed the question as to why and also other had concerns for the protection of personal data.

Design

_____

Sketches

After gathering the research, storyboarding & consumer feedback, I sketched the layout of the screens outlining the various features. This helped me create & visualise new concepts designs that focus more on the interactive experience.

I kept the design simple also adding a feature that allowed users to customise how their data is represented and what they want displayed.

Prototype

_____

Wireframes

The wireframe is a blueprint that enables developers and designers to cooperate and communicate efficiently on the app’s structure, appearance and feel. It depicts the layout with descriptive information, functionality, and what interface components will be present on important screens.

I detailed each verbage, image, form and functionality.

Conclusion

_____

Taking on this challenge was intriguing, especially considering the time constraints (1 week). Prior to undertaking this task my knowledge of personal finance applications was limited. I had seen similar services incorporated into bank apps but never as a stand-alone product. To become more acquainted with these programmes, I began by researching their origin, purpose and benefits. This led me to document a competitive analysis which focused on three known desktop apps (YNAB, Mint Intuit and Money Dashboard.) From start to finish of this design challenge, I enjoyed it.

Trying to design something on a topic I was not familiar within the time constraint gave me new insights and I learned new knowledge and skills. I enjoy challenging and improving myself. The most difficult part was knowing what type of data of the user is displayed. Also how the information is to be represented in chart formats and infographics.
